Crime Scenarios and Prevention

Type of crime – stealing objects from cars
Scenario – Person sees valuable items (cell phones, computers, purses, bags with just-purchased items) inside a locked car. Person breaks car window and steals these items.
Prevention – Do not leave valuable items in plain sight inside your car. Keep cell phones and purses on your person, put computers etc. in the trunk.

Type of crime – stealing objects from houses
Scenario – Person sees valuable items (purses, cell phones, computers) near a door or window in the house. Person breaks window and steals the items.
Prevention – Do not leave valuable items near doors or windows where they can be seen.

Type of crime – Residential burglary, ringing doorbell first
Scenario – Person rings doorbell and does not get an answer. Person assumes no one is home and breaks into house and steals whatever is available.
Prevention – If you are at home ALWAYS answer the doorbell. If there is any doubt about the caller, do not open the door but speak loudly through the closed door. ALWAYS set your alarm if you have one. Typically, these people will flee if an alarm sounds. Ensure that all doors and windows are locked whenever you are not at home.

Type of crime – Residential burglary, seeing resident leave
Scenario – Person walks or drives slowly through neighborhood or parks watching to see when people leave their homes. Person breaks into home and steals whatever is available.
Prevention – Call Pasadena Police (626)744-4241 whenever you see strangers walking through neighborhood, when cars are driving slowly, or when occupied cars park for an extended period of time. Call 911 if you see a stranger entering a neighbor’s home. ALWAYS set your alarm if you have one. Typically, these people will flee if an alarm sounds. Ensure that all doors and windows are locked whenever you are not at home. If possible note model name, color and license number of suspicious cars and provide that information to the police

Type of crime – Unwanted persons solicit
Scenario – Person rings bell and asks for money or other valuables for a “worthy” cause.
Prevention – Solicitors must have a permit from the Police Department in order to solicit. If the person does not have a permit call the Pasadena Police (626)744-4241. Note appearance of solicitor, especially color and style of clothing and any distinguishing characteristics.
